The Dom Pedro V Theatre is the first Western-style theatre in China. It was built in 1860, and it still stands today as a cultural landmark of the Macau community. The Dom Pedro V Theatre continues to be used for important public events and celebrations, although at the time I visited, it was undergoing restoration.

Located on St Augustine's Square, just a stone's throw from St Augustine's Church, Dom Pedro V Theatre was built in the neo-classical style. It comprises a lobby, a small ballroom, a circular auditorium with corridors on both sides. Its triangular pediment is supported on four pairs of Ionic columns. The whole façade is 16 meters high and finished in green stucco, and the ornamentation includes festoons on the arches and floral patterns around the frames in white plaster. The cornice and architrave mouldings are also in white.

Due to termite infestation, the theatre was unused for over two decades, until extensive restoration work was carried out in 1993.

Getting there

Bus Nos. 6, 9, 9A, 16, 18, 23, 28B, 32 and AP1 all comes close to Dom Pedro V Theatre but none pass right in front, so you may have to disembark the bus and walk a bit. Buses 18 and 28B goes to Rua do Padre Antonia, which is as close as it gets to the theatre.
